If you’ve ever stopped by Dimo’s in Wicker Park, and been served by an artist with horn-rimmed glasses and lustrous red hair, you’ve just met superstar Abby. She’s been bringing her style and hilarious jokes to work each day for two years, and recently upgraded to a whole new level of responsibility. As the store scheduler, she ensures that each day runs smoothly, whether we’re bracing ourselves for a long, cold winter, revving up for a busy summer day, or training a new Dimo’s champion.
Read our interview with Abby to learn more about what brought her to Dimo’s to serve looks and sling ‘za.
Where are you from?
The extravagant, suitably named suburb of Downers Grove, Illinois.
What’s something about you that I should know?
That sometimes I may seem rough around the edges or off-putting, but I promise you, I’m just in a constant state of anxiety and probably thinking about how I wish I were cool and extroverted.
What’s the “Abby Factor?”
Staying up way too late mindlessly watching Boy Meets World or SVU and waking up at 2PM with it still playing on my desktop computer with my cat next to me, and maybe, an open bag of sour candy.
Do you have a favorite saying or quote that you live by?
“It be like that sometimes,” because sometimes, it really is just like that. Simply put, you can’t control the way things are so you often just need to shrug your shoulders and accept the fate life puts into your hands.
What’s your summer 2019 anthem?
“Champagne Coast” by Blood Orange, or “Tempo” by the queen herself, Lizzo.
What led you to work at Dimo’s? How long have you worked here?
Honestly, I lived in the suburbs for my entire life and once I moved to the city I thought it would be funny to work at Dimo’s—it’s the place my college friends and I would grab a cheap slice after class. I didn’t think I’d actually get a job at Dimo’s, but since I was still commuting to the suburbs to my serving job, I left that and started to sling pizzas when I wasn’t in class.
Now it’s been two years and 94% of my life feels pizza related but it’s been the most growth-inducing job I’ve ever had and I get to be undoubtedly myself.
What’s something you’d like our crustomers to know about Dimo’s?
That we have better pizzas than Mac n Cheese and Pepperoni, but we’ll keep slinging you those as long as you keep calling us pizza angels at the wee hours of 4AM. But seriously, try the elotes or the al pastor! We also make basically everything in house, down to the vegan ranch, which I truly think is super cool.
