All of our employees, some currently attending college, others recently out of school, and still others learning new trades including coffee roasting and standup comedy, understand the importance of education. So when news began to spread that the students in Chicago Public Schools would be out of school for an indefinite amount of time, we were, at first, shocked.

We watched our family, friends, neighbors, customers, and fellow Chicagoans struggle to find day programs or babysitters for their children. We soon realized we needed to find a way to help. Though we couldn’t come close to the work teachers do in the classroom, we could make up for one part of the school day kids would be missing.

As a pizza place, it was our obvious strong suit. Lunch must go on.

Enter our cooks, drivers, financial gurus and managers. Together, we whipped up cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and the classic mac n’ cheese pies for a few of neighboring alternative programs set up for students. Lunch was served.

Now, post-strike, the Dimo’s crew realized we learned some lessons of our own from this experience. We’re going to get a little sappy, so get ready. The first lesson is that we have very welcoming, friendly neighbors. The second is that we’re very thankful for our own continued educations. (Bring on the knitting classes and comedy lessons.) And the third?

Pizza tastes good at any age.
